Why does St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador get such a late spring?

Being on an island, its seasons are always a bit out of whack with the mainland. It's something to do with the difference in density between water, air and soil, but I'm not a scientist so I can't say exactly...I just remember that from high school geography!
