What kind of engine oil should i use?

Im going to change the engine oil in a 01 gmc yukon with the 5.3l and put synthetic but since it has over 180000 miles would it make it worse or even worth it? The engine is great does not burn oil or leaks any oil at all or should i stay with the conventional and what brand should i use for best performance thanks
